The Republican Presidential race is the topic in newspapers, magazines, newscasts and a host of websites and blogs across the country. In years past Idaho voters would cast their ballots for their presidential choice during our primary which is held in May. Normally by that time the Republican nominee had already been chosen and our votes were irrelevant. In July of 2011 the Idaho Republican Party voted to move from a primary system of voting for a presidential candidate to a caucus system. This is the first election where the voters of Idaho will cast their ballots when the race is still very much undecided.
The Republican Party of Kootenai County is very excited to hold its first ever-presidential caucus. Many precinct committeeman and volunteers have put in countless hours in preparation for this event. The caucus doors will open at 5:00PM on Tuesday March 6th. Voting begins promptly at 7:00PM and the doors will be closed at that time. Due to the large number of Republican voters that we have in this county (we are the third largest voting county in the state) and the lack of a building large enough to hold all the people we are anticipating, we voted to hold the caucus at several different locations simultaneously throughout the county. We have spent several weeks securing these sites and the caucus locations are attached. They are also listed on our website as well as advertised in the local papers. You must be an affiliated Republican voter to participate in the Republican caucus. Affiliation forms are available from your local precinct committeemen or the County Clerk’s website. These forms will also be available at each caucus location for your convenience.
We are thrilled with all the interest and enthusiasm that the voters of Kootenai County are expressing concerning this event and we look forward to joining the rest of the state in determining which candidate will receive Idaho’s 32 delegates at the Republican National Convention.
