A Resolution in Memorial Remembrance of Peter Charles Erbland Precinct Committeeman, Precinct 420

WHEREAS, Peter Charles Erbland, born November 20, 1952, in Canandaigua, New York, and long a resident of Coeur d’Alene, departed this life on August 2, 2026, at the age of seventy-three; and

WHEREAS, Peter began his legal career in public service as Chief Deputy Prosecutor for Kootenai County and later served as Chief of the Criminal Justice Division in the Office of the Idaho Attorney General, thereafter maintaining a distinguished private practice devoted to complex civil litigation, mediation, and arbitration; and

WHEREAS, through decades of professional work, he earned a statewide reputation as a man of exceptional character and ability, commanding the respect of colleagues, clients, staff, and opposing counsel alike, and was recognized by the Idaho State Bar with its Professionalism Award in 2016 and its Distinguished Lawyer Award in 2018, as well as by election as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers; and

WHEREAS, Peter was a man of firm and iron-clad principles, yet possessed the equally remarkable quality of genuine fairness, listening carefully and considering differing perspectives without compromising the convictions by which he lived; and

WHEREAS, his unassuming manner sought neither attention nor prominence, yet when Peter spoke, people listened, because his words were thoughtful, measured, principled, and offered with respect for everyone in the room; and

WHEREAS, Peter possessed a rare ability to see an issue from more than one perspective and to help others do the same, bringing reason to emotionally charged disagreements and creating common ground where it sometimes seemed none could be found; and a powerful opportunity for Idahoans to reclaim control of their republican form of government, ensuring that decisions about Idaho’s future are driven by those who live here, work here, and/or call this state home;

WHEREAS, this combination of conviction, fairness, patience, and wisdom made Peter a remarkable mediator, not only in his professional life but among those with whom he served, earning him the trust and respect even of those who did not always share his conclusions; and

WHEREAS, Peter demonstrated by his example that strongly held principles and civility are not opposing virtues, and that disagreement need never diminish respect, friendship, or our willingness to listen to one another; and

WHEREAS, motivated by a desire to foster greater civility, honesty, and integrity in local political life, Peter became a founding member of North Idaho Republicans and accepted election as Precinct Committeeman for Precinct 420, faithfully discharging that trust with diligence, wisdom, fairness, and quiet leadership; and

WHEREAS, those who served alongside Peter knew him not merely as an accomplished attorney or dedicated Precinct Committeeman, but as a good and honorable man whose company was a pleasure, whose counsel was valued, whose character inspired confidence, and whose presence made the organizations and people around him better; and

WHEREAS, beyond his public and professional responsibilities, Peter found his deepest fulfillment in the roles of devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, and lived his faith as a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church with quiet consistency; and

WHEREAS, Peter is survived by his wife, Tiffany Erbland, his children and grandchildren, his stepchildren and their families, his siblings, and a wide circle of friends and colleagues whose lives were enriched by knowing him;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee records its profound sorrow at the passing of Peter Charles Erbland and extends its sincere sympathy to his family and to all who knew, respected, and loved him; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this body honors with gratitude Peter's faithful service as Precinct Committeeman for Precinct 420, his distinguished legal career, his contributions to the civic life of North Idaho, and, above all, the character with which he lived and served; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we remember Peter as a man who could stand firmly upon principle without ceasing to listen, who could disagree without diminishing another person, and who could bring wisdom, reason, and fairness to difficult conversations; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the members of this Committee recognize in Peter's life an example worthy of our own public service: to hold our convictions firmly, to treat one another fairly, to listen before judging, and to remember that character is demonstrated not merely by the positions we defend, but by the manner in which we defend them; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be presented to the family of Peter Charles Erbland as an expression of our gratitude, respect, affection, and remembrance, that it be preserved in the permanent records of the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee, and that it be published on the Committee’s website in honor of a good man whose service and example will not be forgotten.
